SRINAGAR: Seven civilians were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama, after security forces opened fire during clashes which broke out between locals and security forces during an encounter in the area. A soldier and three militants were killed in the encounter in Sirnoo village, the Army said.
The violence has led to a tense situation in the region, drawing sharp political reactions. The security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in Sirnoo village in Pulwama district of south Kashmir after receiving specific intelligence input about the presence of militants in the area. Jammu and Kashmir leaders Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah blamed the administration for the violence.
The deceased have been identified as Liyaqat Dar, Suhail Ahmad, Shahbaaz, Amir Ahmad Paul and Abid Hussain Lone. The body of two youths lying in the hospital is yet to be identified. Eyewitnesses say the locals killed had bullet injuries in their head and chest.
