No arrest without probe under SC/ST Act in Madhya Pradesh: CM Chouhan

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, there will not be any arrests without investigation under the SC/ST Act in Madhya Pradesh, In an attempt to pacify the upper caste groups in wake of upcoming assembly polls in the state.

The central government amended the SC/ST Act to assert that any person accused of committing atrocities that fall under the act would be arrested after a complaint is filed. A number of upper-caste groups had called for a nationwide shutdown on September 6 to protest against parliament restoring the SC/ST Act provisions.

Interacting with the media in the tribal Balaghat district during his Jan Ashirwad Yatra, Chouhan also said that he won’t allow misuse of SC/ST Act in MP. Chouhan’s comments came after several people Thursday took to streets to protest against the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill 2018 which was passed by Parliament in August.

On the other hand opposition Congress condemned Mr Chouhan’s statement. They first dishonoured and disobeyed the court, and now the parliament,” said party leader Bhupendra Gupta.
